The Black British Millennial Women Project
This project was conceived to celebrate the achievements and impact of Black British millennial women in the UK. Their success is often overshadowed by narratives that distort or diminish their accomplishments. The individuality and agency of these women are often ignored. Replaced by stereotypes and ideological biases that focus on race and gender. Our project challenges these notions. By sharing the stories of these different women, each making remarkable strides in major UK industries, we highlight the rich diversity of their opinions, values, and definitions of success—celebrating the essence of individuality.
More than just countering narratives that marginalize Black women or perpetuate the ‘bigotry of low expectations’, we hope that one takeaway from our work is the undeniable elegance and beauty of each woman featured. Black women's appearances are all too frequently weaponized against them, often with the intention of silencing their voices. However, each story in our collection serves as a powerful counter-narrative, emphasizing that the power of Black women exists in an array of gradients, shapes, and sizes.
We concentrate on British Black millennial women as many of them are descendants of parents who migrated to the UK in search of a better life. These women represent the realization of their parents' dreams and aspirations. Their parents’ paved the way, and now, these women continue that legacy, emerging as the future leaders and role models of the UK.
In line with our mission, we aim to use their success to shine a spotlight on pressing issues that are currently overlooked or undervalued by the broader public.
To achieve the aim of our project we profiled Black British millennial women from various sectors across the UK. We captured two distinct images of each participant: one in their work attire, and another showcasing their personal style, beauty, and elegance. Along with these images, we explored their individual perspectives by asking them the following questions:
What did you want to be when you grew up?
What do you want most in the future?
What’s been your greatest achievement to date?
What’s your advice to other women/girls?
What does it mean for you being a black girl in your industry?
What school did you go to?
What is the most important thing in the world to you?
We invite you to explore the work we've put together. If you feel moved to support us, please consider purchasing the book (or multiple copies for friends, businesses, or anyone who would benefit). These stories share the everyday excellence that Black British millennial women are achieving to lay the path for future generations and leverage this success to solve for problems in the present and future.
