Tonya, Jewellery Entrepreneur

  1. What did you want to be when you grew up?

A TV presenter. Back in the day there were only a handful of people representing us on TV, such as Andi Peters and Floella Benjamin. I wanted to be the next face on the screens representing us. I remember practicing in the mirror, interviewing my dolls!

  2. What do you want most in the future?

To continue to thrive in whatever avenue I choose to explore. Good health and happiness for myself and everyone around me, and to win the lottery of course!

  3. What’s been your biggest achievement to date?

My children first and foremost. I’ve raised two amazing humans who make me beam with pride.

  4. What’s your advice to other women/girls?

To believe in yourself. To step out of your comfort zone and explore different avenues to see where your passion lies.

Even if a certain market may feel over saturated, there’s room for you too, as you are YOU and that’s your superpower.

Look past society’s expectations and norms, and go break those barriers.

And finally, don’t ever feel that it’s too late to start something, I started my first business at 40, and learnt so many invaluable skills in the process.

  5. What does it mean being a black woman in your industry?

It means that I get to showcase us, showing up, putting our best foot forward, and looking amazing while we do it! It’s been an honour to see such amazing, inspirational women wearing our jewellery.

  6. What school did you go to?

    Regis.

  7. What is the most important thing in the world to you?

My family. I have two amazing sons who make me so proud. An amazing mother, sister and partner who support me and champion me in any and everything I do. I wouldn’t be me without them. I learn so much from them individually and as a collective. Their support is the main reason why I thrive!
