Abigail, Technology Professional
What did you want to be when you grew up?
Growing up, I always thought I'd end up as a fashion journalist because it combined the two things, I love the most; writing and fashion.
What do you want most in the future?
My goal is to build my own documentary production company that tells black stories, embraces black culture and amplifies black culture.
What’s been your biggest achievement to date?
In October 2022, I won my first award for my work in the data centre infrastructure space. That was great, but more generally being a black woman in Tech is my biggest achievement to date. Being in spaces where you're the only one that looks like you was daunting at first but I have now learnt to shake off any doubts or fears and shine in every space I find myself.
What’s your advice to other women/girls?
Discover what you are passionate about and be consistent with it. Most times, your passion can be monetized which will make your working experience enjoyable. You'll also thrive because you're passionate about the path you're heading down. Never be embarrassed to ask for help - the worst they can say is no, then it will be up to you to find someone who will eventually say yes!
What does it mean being a black woman in your industry?
The facts show that Black women are an underrepresented group in tech. Being in the industry for me means I am able to show other black girls that we do exist in spaces typically dominated by non-marginalized groups.
What school did you go to?
I went to Notre Dame Roman Catholic Girls’ school in Elephant and Castle.
What is the most important thing in the world to you?
My faith is the most important thing to me in the world. I have dedicated time to build my relationship with God which has, in turn, helped me navigate this thing called life.
