What did you want to be when you grew up?
Growing up I had a lot of interests and didn’t quite know what to pursue. Of all my interests, I loved art and athletics the most, and I guess I was quite good at both. I used to spend hours painting and would easily lose track of time. I still have a few precious pieces and miraculously managed to sell a few on commission, which I’m still very proud of.
What do you want most in the future?
Most of all I’d love to build an amazing future for my family, full of options and opportunities. I also want to make an impact and live a meaningful life.
I guess it’s quite a subjective goal but ultimately, I would really love to achieve this by honing my creative skills to solve problems where others need it.What’s been your biggest achievement to date?
Aside from family, I feel proudest of my PhD in computational chemistry. It’s been one of the most challenging things I’ve ever had to work on and it’s transformed the way I look at problems in life. I believe every aspect of my life has benefited greatly and it’s permanently changed the trajectory of my professional opportunities. Although I’ve continued to make new grounds in my career, I think I’ll continue to hold on to this milestone dearly.
What’s your advice to other women/girls?
When you pursue big goals, it can often be terrifying. It’s important to not let imposter syndrome get the better of you and that you do your utmost to seize the opportunity, learning as much as you can. One day your skills will speak for themselves and you won’t have to worry so much… at least not about that!
What does it mean being a black woman in your industry?
I feel I bring a unique perspective to things and try my best to make a space for others too.
What school did you go to?
I studied at Bexley Grammar School in Welling.
What is the most important thing in the world to you?
Family, love and respect.
