Ketiwe, Surveyor
What did you want to be when you grew up?
Both a lawyer and a hairdresser at the same time.
What do you want most in the future?
Either working for myself or in a senior position in a company in an industry I enjoy.
What’s been your biggest achievement to date?
Getting my chartership, been at that for a while!
What’s your advice to other women/girls?
Don’t compare yourself to others.
Have no fear.
Don’t be scared to make mistakes or ask questions.
Do it now!! (Whatever it is, studying, a career move, a sabbatical). Just do it.
Even if you’re not confident act like you are. As you start to navigate the workplace you realise there are so many people who are winging it. If you follow all the advice that I have given prior to this point as well as taking the time to listen and learn you’ll be fine.
Finally, find a mentor.
What does it mean being a black woman in your industry?
You’ll be the only one on a project or in an office.
I sometimes feel like there is a top toe/walking on eggshells behaviour when it comes to working with me or giving me feedback, which I feel can hinder my personal growth and development.
I also feel that people treat me as an apprentice, especially as I don’t have kids and am not married. I think it is to do with the fact that the black don’t crack.
What school did you go to?
All girls catholic school in St Albans.
What is the most important thing in the world to you?
