Vanessa A, HR Professional & Entrepreneur
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wasn’t 100% sure but I knew I wanted to do something art related. I was obsessed with art growing up.
What do you want most in the future?
I want a stable, healthy, and happy life for my daughter.
What’s been your biggest achievement to date?
Launching my small business Joy’s Crown. I did this whilst raising a 10-month-old baby. It was not easy – but was worth it.
What’s your advice to other women/girls?
Get a mentor outside of family and friends. I wish I did this years ago as the insight you gain is so useful, not just surrounding work but also life.
What does it mean being a black woman in your industry?
I moved into the world of HR a few months ago and it is very apparent that there is lack of diversity. I now know more than ever that my voice is important. Even though leadership has a huge part to play in creating a space that represents everyone, I know that me being there is a great start.
What school did you go to?
I went to Convent of Jesus and Mary – a catholic school in North-West London where I met my most cherished friends.
What is the most important thing in the world to you?
My daughter, Joy. She really is my pride and JOY (no pun intended). I do everything because of her and I pray to God for the strength to continue to be the best example for her and nurture her to be the best version of herself.
